Six Tips for Safe Travel and Stay during Holiday in US
Continuing with our earlier discussion on traveling safe in US, here we touch upon some tips that can make traveling by car and stay in US safe and enjoyable for you.
1. There may not be many Tourist Information Offices in US to provide you with the required information. The only thing that can help you is being a member of your country’s Automobile Association. Make sure you get all the required information from them before you start your trip. They may even have a reciprocal courtesy arrangement with the American Automobile Association. In that case, AAA may be ready to help you find lodging and car repair outlets.
2. If you are a member of the International Youth Association, find out where in US they have hostels which can be an inexpensive boarding option. But make sure you have all the information before you leave your country.
3. Whatever you may chose, plan your accommodation in advance. You may not always find an easy accommodation as soon as you land in a city in US. Sleeping in bus stations or train stations is not allowed and police will ask you to move in such a case. Never sleep in your car or on the pathways along the highways. Highways have motels to suit every budget requirement, so keep track of which all are available on your way and make a stop in time. You can even call in advance or can get a room on arrival but avoid traveling at night as some stretches can be totally uninhabited.
4. “Bed & Breakfast”, a famous concept in Europe, covers only very exclusive establishments in US, which are fairly expensive. So, do not be misled into thinking you can check into one on the way as it will put a huge dent into your vacation budget. Find a hotel or a motel to suit your requirement and make an advance booking.
5. Keep off private property as not only can you be arrested, the owners can even shoot you on site. Never camp on private land, in wilderness or next to highways. Find designated camping areas to set up a tent, if you have to. Always go to public beaches and lake shores as private is really private in US.
6. Women travelers especially of they are traveling alone of in a group of women only, should understand that attitude towards women in US is difference compared to Europe or other areas. Women alone will be considered available and men will not miss an opportunity to make a pass. So, avoid going to places with lot of men and if you feel uncomfortable in a situation, just get up and leave.
