Top Ten Tips to Reduce Your Travel Insurance Premium

Traveling outside your country requires more planning and foresight. You may have bought travel insurance before but for foreign travel, it is a must have and can be fairly expensive. Here are ten tips to help you get the best cover for your investment.
1. Like every other insurance, shop around for your travel insurance too. Your travel agent will have access to and will provide only standard insurance options. You can get a cheaper insurance suited to your specific needs, if you shop around a little in the market.
2. Give complete information about your medical conditions. It does not always mean high rates but hiding information does give the insurer a chance to refuse cover when you need it the most.
3. Read the offer document carefully and be aware of the upper age limit especially if your birthday is falling within the vacation period. Getting a year older can make you ineligible for the much needed cover. Do remember that sometimes the age limit is as low as 40.
4. Not all activities and all pieces of luggage are covered by standard insurance packages. Scuba diving and golf clubs are such examples. So, do take extra cover if your itinerary involves scuba diving, golf or other such activities.
5. Your credit card company provides cover for your luggage and personal belongings, so, you can reduce your insurance rate by as much as 88% by excluding these from your travel insurance cover.
6. The most important component of your insurance cover is the medical cover. Make sure to have a large medical cover so that, in the worst case, you are not stuck with high medical bills, on top of your illness.
7.If you are one of those fortunate few who take multiple trips abroad, in a year, getting a multi-trip cover will be prudent. This will be cheaper than single trip cover and will reduce your work if you end up making last minute bookings.
8. If you are not expecting to face many problems, you can always increase your deductibles and reduce your premium. But make sure you have some way to take care of those deductibles, if required.
9.On the other hand, if you are prone to accidents or illnesses, take excess waiver in advance. Investing as little as $25 can save you a few hundred dollars later if your requirements exceed your cover.
10. Take a policy which covers your whole family. This policy will cover all trips whether you take them together or separately. Just make sure to check if unaccompanied children, under 18, are covered or not by the insurance.
